Chapter  5

The guys are killing lice one by one by scraping them off their skin and putting them into an empty boot polishing tin can heated up. Himmelstoss has arrived in camp, proving the rumor was true (tormenting recruits). So he was sent to the front line. Then they all start talking about what they’re going to do when they get back home. Which the younger ones mentioned drinking and women, While Kropp says it won’t end and  Tjaden wants to get revenge on Himmelstross. Paul has no clue what to do. That’s all the young men know there is war.

Himmelstross walks up to the group of man and orders Tjaden to stand, but Tjaden does not. Himmelstross gets all pissy and threatens to report him if he doesn’t and he won’t stand. So Himmelstross storms off and gets a major. Then he asks where he is, the guys says they don’t know  So, the major says to tell him he has 10 min to report to the orderly room. Himmelstross returns and Kropp insults him he walks away pissed.

Tjaden and Kropp have to go on trial for insubordination and paul and the others stick up for Tjaden saying how cruel he was in training. So Tjaden gets 3 days open arrest and Kropp gets 1 day, Paul and the others visit them in “jail”.

Paul and Kat give two cigarettes to a wagon driver to take them to the place where they thought they heard geese.  Paul climbs over the fence and finds 2 geese he trys to kill them fast but he fails and a dog runs up to him and he pulls out his knife and kills the dog, then he kills the geese and they cook it. Paul feels really close with Kat at this moment.
